ZedX is currently seeking an experienced Applied Weather Data Scientist to join our scientific software team. The selected individual will be responsible for development and operation of ZedX’s core meteorological data acquisition and processing in the State College Pennsylvania area (USA). He or she will interface with the company’s advanced weather analytics and agricultural modeling teams. Position seniority and compensation will depend on the level of a candidate’s expertise and experience. The position will require occasional short-term travels in the United States and internationally.

The ideal candidate should have at least three years of experience in the management of data for meteorological applications, with a good understanding of deterministic modeling, machine learning and statistical analysis. He or she should have an optimistic, forward-thinking, and be comfortable working collaboratively with other employees in an agile, innovative team environment. Applicant should be able to set realistic timelines for completing tasks and be capable of meeting critical deadlines.

Job Requirements

Candidate should be a team player, self-motivated, self-reliant, and have strong communication, writing, and problem-solving skills. He or she would report to the director of research and development. Interested individuals must meet the following minimum requirements.

  • Ph.D. or M.S. degree with experience in Geography, Meteorology or related sciences, or any applicable Engineering field that emphasizes data science. BS degree with sufficient background and qualifications will be considered.
  • Fluent in speaking and writing in English.
  • Ability to manage the integration of different computer languages.
  • Proficiency in working in UNIX/LINUX environments with open source tools.
  • In-depth understanding of geospatial data and familiarity with open GIS technology.
  • Experience with ingesting and processing large volumes of weather data from public and private sources and applying quality assurance and quality control tests
  • Experience with a wide range of weather data formats (binary, ASCII, GRIB, NetCDF, HDF, etc.).
  • Understanding of the science and data requirements for developing algorithms that support real-time decision making.
  • Ability to create analytic solutions for challenging weather-based products, especially those related to radar, satellite, station, and grid weather datasets.
  • Working knowledge of graphical tools (i.e. grads, matplotlib) for displaying meteorological data.
  • Able to collaborate closely with systems engineering teams to transition software from development to operations, and provide ongoing high-level technical support as necessary.
  • Familiar with state-of-the-art software documentation standards

He or she should have an optimistic, friendly disposition, and be comfortable working collaboratively with other employees in an agile, innovative environment. Applicant should be able to set realistic timelines for completing tasks and be capable of meeting critical deadlines.

Applied Weather Data Scientist
