ZedX is Awarded Major Grant by The Technology Collaborative (TTC).
BELLEFONTE, PA - March 31, 2008 - ZedX, Inc. has won a major grant from The Technology Collaborative (TTC), a statewide economic development organization that supports the growth of Pennsylvania's world-class robotics, cyber-security and digital technologies industries. The project, called Sensor Networks for Disease Management in Specialty Crops, will be lead by ZedX in partnership with Robotics Institute of Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) and The Pennsylvania State University (PSU).
The grant will enable ZedX to commercialize a series of products and services consisting of the sensor network developed by CMU and a ZedX developed website containing IT tools that can combine model output and sensor data into products supporting disease control decision making.
ZedX plans to market the commercial version of the service with one or more business partners. As part of ZedX's "go-to-market" strategy, the experimental orchard at the Fruit Research and Extension Center in Biglerville, PA, will be utilized as a "proving ground" to be visited by potential clients. The commercialized service will provide online products, such as a map of "pest control" zones, which will be derived from sensor network data and model simulations of crop and pest development.
The pest control zones identify risk areas for disease infection within an orchard. A grower can use these zones to guide variable-rate chemical applications in the orchard. Variable-rate applications reduce the cost of disease control and minimize unnecessary sprays in the environment. Other products will provide a temporal tracking of disease development in sub-orchard areas. This tracking will help growers in the seasonal management of diseases.
